The best free backlink checker depends on the question you need to answer. For your own verified site, start with Google Search Console. For competitor research, explore the public or account-based tools from established backlink-index providers. For a particular link, inspect the source page directly.

Google Search Console: start with your own property
Search Console is the first place to review Google's reported external linking sites and linked pages for a property you control. Export the relevant report and keep the date. The official documentation explains that this is not a comprehensive list of every link.
Use the report to identify patterns and important source domains. Do not interpret a disappearing row as proof of a penalty or a complete loss of ranking credit. Inspect the source and compare other evidence before taking action. Search Console does not give you another company's verified property data.
Ahrefs: explore a competitor backlink sample
The Ahrefs backlink checker offers a starting point for investigating a domain you do not own. Before comparing results, confirm whether you are researching a domain, subdomain or exact page. Free results may be restricted, and fuller exports may require an account or paid plan.

Moz Link Explorer: work with DA and linking domains
Moz Link Explorer is useful when your workflow includes Domain Authority, Page Authority and inbound-link research. Check current account requirements and report availability. Avoid relying on older Open Site Explorer instructions as if they described the current interface.

Other providers: verify access before planning a workflow
Semrush, Majestic and other providers maintain their own link research products. Their public views, trials and export allowances may differ from paid accounts. If you need a particular report, check its availability directly. A trial requiring payment details is different from an unrestricted free tool.

How to compare results fairly
Build a small reference list of known source pages, including recent and older links. Query the same target scope on the same day. Record the source URL, destination, reported status and any filtering. Then manually inspect a sample that appears in one tool but not another.
Separate three questions: did the tool discover a link, does the link still exist, and is the link relevant to your business? A large database does not automatically provide the best answer to all three. Do not describe a tool as universally most accurate based on a handful of domains.

- Export available information from Search Console for a property you control.
- Check a relevant competitor in one available third-party tool.
- Review the source pages of your most important links and prospects.
- Record evidence in the free audit sheet.
- Investigate broken targets and publisher changes before contacting anyone.
- Compare real organic landing-page performance with your prior reporting period.
Keep the review focused. If you are building a new prospect list, a backlink checker may reveal competitor sources, but it will not tell you whether you qualify for each publisher. Common questions
Can a free tool show every backlink?
Do not assume completeness. Vendor crawlers cover different parts of the web and free products may limit visible results. Even Google's Links report is not comprehensive. Combine sources where useful and state limitations in your report.
Can a checker tell me which links Google counts?
No third-party authority metric establishes Google's treatment of a particular link. Use tools for discovery and analysis, then assess the page, relevance and link attributes. Avoid ranking promises based on a checker result.
Should I remove links flagged as toxic?
A label is not enough evidence. Review the links and your actual situation before acting. Read the backlink quality hub and disavow guidance, rather than using a tool score as a removal rule.
