Link building statistics are useful when they help you make a better decision. A percentage without a clear denominator, source and observation period can be misleading. This library explains how to measure a campaign and interpret its results without treating industry averages as promises.
Start with the question
If you want to understand your site's profile, begin with backlink statistics. If you want to improve a campaign, separate outreach response rates from guest-post publication outcomes. If you want to evaluate spending, use pricing measurements and contribution-based ROI.
These are different units of analysis. Mixing them into one score hides useful information. A campaign can receive many replies but few relevant placements. Another can produce a useful listing without a measurable ranking change. Report the stage that was actually observed.
What these guides contain
Each guide defines a metric, provides a formula, works through an illustrative calculation and explains its limitations. Example numbers are not BacklinkGrid customer results, a new survey or universal targets. We have removed unsupported claims that appeared to cite studies without a verifiable source.
When using an external study, follow the link to the original publication. Check its collection period, sample selection, geography and definitions. A roundup dated this year can still be quoting research collected many years earlier. Preserve that distinction when presenting the data.
A useful reporting structure
- Inputs: research time, content work, tools and publisher costs.
- Activity: qualified prospects, messages, submissions and follow-ups.
- Intermediate outcomes: relevant replies, accepted ideas and verified publications.
- Business outcomes: qualified visits, leads and attributable contribution.
- Uncertainty: incomplete reporting, open work, changing tool coverage and attribution limits.
Keep source URLs and evidence alongside your counts. Use the free tracking templates to record what happened, when and what remains to do. The backlink audit hub explains how to investigate the links behind the report.
Avoid false precision
A site score is not a Google ranking score. Read Domain Authority statistics before comparing vendors or businesses. Likewise, anchor text percentages describe a sample; they do not establish a safe optimization ratio.
Small samples can change dramatically after a single outcome. Show the underlying counts as well as percentages, and compare completed cohorts using the same method. If a campaign has not matured, label it as ongoing rather than forcing an early winner.
