# Link Prospect Qualification Checklist

Systematic checklist for evaluating link building prospects. Quick-scan filtering plus deep-dive analysis to prioritise the right opportunities.

Canonical: https://backlinkgrid.com/resources/link-prospect-qualification-checklist

Not all link opportunities are worth pursuing. Effective link building requires systematic qualification to focus effort on prospects most likely to convert into valuable links.

This checklist provides a two-stage approach: quick filtering to eliminate poor prospects fast, and deep analysis for priority evaluation.

## Directory qualification: four worked decisions

These examples use official requirements checked on **9 September 2026**. They demonstrate a decision process, not measured traffic or an endorsement of every listing on a platform. Eligibility and budget are hard gates: a high domain metric cannot compensate for failing either.

| Candidate and business | Evidence | Decision | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile for an online-only research shop | [Google excludes online-only businesses](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13763036?hl=en) | Exclude | Choose a route appropriate to an online business |
| BetaList with a zero publisher budget | [BetaList says all submissions require payment](https://betalist.com/support) | Exclude on budget | Do not spend time completing the gated pricing flow |
| G2 for a consumer app still in beta | [G2 excludes B2C and alpha/beta products](https://documentation.g2.com/help/docs/finding-or-listing-a-product-on-g2) | Exclude | Revisit only if the actual product becomes eligible |
| SaaSHub for working SEO software | [The product form](https://www.saashub.com/services/submit) offered a free route in our visit | Continue to detailed review | Check category fit, description, public listing and current terms |

The fourth decision is deliberately “continue”, not “approved”. A form accepting your URL does not tell you whether a public listing will be useful. Read the [SaaSHub walkthrough](/blog/submit-product-saashub) for original screenshots of the actual flow.

### Inspect the page where a customer would find you

Open a relevant category and a recent listing, not only the homepage. Record the exact URL and a short factual observation for each question:

- Can a visitor navigate from the category to the listing without searching for its exact title?
- Does the listing explain the product or business, or merely display a keyword and outbound link?
- Are contact, correction and ownership routes understandable?
- Is the website destination accurate, and are paid placements labelled appropriately?
- Does the listing remain readable without logging in?

Use the [crawlability checker](/tools/crawlability-checker) for a bounded technical inspection and the [live backlink checker](/tools/live-backlink-checker) for a known source URL. A blocked request is inconclusive, not proof of a bad publisher. Neither tool establishes Google indexing or the number of customers using a directory.

### Save a reason that another person can understand

“Good site, DR 80” is not a qualification note. “Released B2B product qualifies; free basic profile available; no duplicate found; category page helps buyers compare invoicing tools” identifies the reasoning and what must be rechecked. That sentence is an illustrative note, not a claim about a particular accepted submission.

Use the [prospect tracker](/templates/prospect-tracker.csv) and add columns for requirements URL, checked date and published URL if your workflow needs them. Review [directories by business type](/blog/business-directories-by-business-type) before applying this checklist to a large list.

- Expecting perfect relevance match

### Under-Qualification

- Not checking content quality

### Right Balance

- Focus on relevance and quality over raw metrics
- Consider your own domain's authority level
- Trust your judgment on borderline cases
